Human trafficking is one of the largest criminal activities in the world. According to the National Human Trafficking Hotline, United States law defines human trafficking as “the use of force, fraud, or coercion to compel a person into commercial sex acts or labor or services against his or her will.” According to federal law, any minor under the age of 18 engaging in commercial sex is a victim of sex trafficking, regardless of the presence of force, fraud, or coercion.
While some are more vulnerable than others, human trafficking can happen to anyone. In 2019, there were 11,500 cases of human trafficking reported to the NHTH—but the criminal activity’s reach is far beyond that, as NHTH describes it as multi-billion dollar criminal industry that denies freedom to 24.9 million people around the world.
If you believe you are a victim of sex or human trafficking or may have information about a potential trafficking situation, please contact the National Human Trafficking Hotline. If you or someone you know is in immediate danger, please call 911.
